Overview: Arcangues is a Basque Country course arranged around the village, château and church of Arcangues, with views toward the Pyrenees and the ocean. The routing uses rolling agricultural ground, mature trees and the village landscape to create a course that feels integrated into its setting. Changes in elevation, narrow approaches and the relationship between the fairways and historic buildings give the round a character unlike a detached resort development.
History: The course was created in the early 1990s by brothers Guy and Jean d’Arcangues, who converted family agricultural land into a golf project. The club’s official history credits American architect Ronald Fream, correcting the target Jacques Arcangues attribution. The château’s own history dates the golf’s construction to 1991, while later generations of the d’Arcangues family continued the project and the club added a short-game centre in 2011.
Did You Know? The club house occupies a restored Basque farm dating from 1585, and the château park contains century-old oaks. The official history describes the golf property as a 67-hectare reserve of greenery and biodiversity surrounding the village, church and château rather than simply a course on the edge of town.
