Overview: Golf & Country Club Gut Altentann is an 18-hole rolling estate landscape near Henndorf am Wallersee. Designed by Jack Nicklaus, Broad meadows and woodland frame a Nicklaus layout whose hazards ask players to choose the right moment to attack.Published rear-marker figures give par 72 and roughly 6,700 yards, a championship scale that still fits the Salzburg estate. Nicklaus’s familiar emphasis on positioning appears in the relationship between tee shots and greens, where a well-chosen line can simplify a demanding approach.
History: Gut Altentann grew from a mid-1980s project and was completed in 1989. The club describes it as the first 18-hole Jack Nicklaus course on the European mainland, and it later joined Austria’s Leading Golf Courses. The completed course brought an international design name into the Salzburg region at a time when European golf was attracting more American architectural influence. Its estate setting remained central to the final result.
Did You Know? The key historical distinction is its status as Nicklaus’s first 18-hole design on the European mainland, not simply its Signature branding. Gut Altentann is notable for a precise “first in Europe” design milestone: it was Nicklaus’s first 18-hole course on the European mainland.
