Overview: Hofgut Georgenthal is a modern 18-hole resort course in the Taunus hills near Wiesbaden. Christian Althaus designed a landscape-led layout that combines the feel of a Scottish links course with regional features: orchard meadows, the line of the Roman Limes and natural-looking water hazards. The course is visually varied and surprisingly physical, with significant changes in elevation, generous green complexes and a steady sequence of choices from tee to green. Its open spaces and mature edges give the round a strong sense of place.
History: Golf was added to the historic Georgenthal estate as part of the resort’s renewal. The practice facilities came first, followed by the first nine holes in September 2015. The complete 18-hole championship course was released for play in spring 2016. Althaus’s design links the modern golf destination to the estate’s much older history, including its origins as a tithe farm in 1692 and its position beside the UNESCO-listed Limes.
Did You Know? The design is organised around three local themes named by the resort: the Roman Limes, orchard trees and water. They are not just decorative references; each appears as a recurring landscape element during the round.
