Overview: Barbaroux is an 18-hole parkland course in the Var, set within 87 hectares of Mediterranean forest near Brignoles. The course is par 72 and the current profile is listed at 6,635 yards. Pete Dye and P.B. Dye created a bold American-style layout in which strategic fairways, fast undulating greens, sculpted bunkers and water hazards create the main decisions. The wooded setting can make the holes feel secluded, but the design is not timid: changes of scale, shaping around the greens and the need to choose a safe line all ask the golfer to balance ambition with precision. Barbaroux is a resort course with a serious architectural character. Its challenge comes from the interaction of the forest, relief, hazards and green contours rather than from length alone, and the five teeing areas give the same design room to play differently for different standards of golfer.
History: The 18-hole Barbaroux course opened in 1988 in the Provence Verte landscape. The official course history credits Pete Dye with the design and presents the layout as a course built in the American tradition, while French Golf Federation material identifies both Pete Dye and P.B. Dye. The course has retained its identity as a forest setting with large strategic features, and the resort has developed around the golf course with hotel, restaurant and spa facilities. Current course information describes more than 6,000 metres, par 72, 87 hectares of preserved Mediterranean forest and a Bronze Golf for Biodiversity label. Those facts place Barbaroux in a clear line between ambitious late-1980s design and the environmental management of the present resort.
Did You Know? Barbaroux received a Bronze label in the French Golf Federation's Golf for Biodiversity programme, delivered with the National Museum of Natural History. The distinction reflects the course's current ecological work within its preserved Mediterranean forest, alongside its deliberately dramatic Dye design.
