Overview: The Jack Nicklaus Signature Course at Pronghorn occupies a high-desert site outside Bend, with ancient juniper, exposed lava rock and long views toward the Cascade peaks. The course uses wide fairway corridors and carefully framed target lines, but the apparent openness can be deceptive: the volcanic ridges and rock outcrops influence angles into the greens and shape the preferred side of many holes. From the back markers it stretches to 7,379 yards at par 72. The experience is defined by the meeting of a large-scale Nicklaus strategy and a stark Central Oregon landscape rather than by a heavily wooded parkland setting.
History: Pronghorn’s Nicklaus course was the first of the two major layouts in the development and opened in 2004. Nicklaus Design described the 640-acre site as a private high-desert golf community intertwined with lava ridges and outcroppings, with views of nine snow-capped mountain peaks. The Tom Fazio course was then developed alongside it, making Pronghorn a rare property with two distinct championship designs from major architects. The Nicklaus layout established the project’s architectural language: broad desert scale, geological edges and a strong emphasis on the approach shot.
Did You Know? Nicklaus Design’s original description of Pronghorn highlighted views toward nine snow-capped mountain peaks. The volcanic ground and distant skyline give the course a geographic identity that is unusually easy to read from the fairways.
