Overview: Golf Castle Otočec is an 18-hole, par-72 course in Slovenia's Dolenjska region, set among rolling woodland and the meadows beside the Krka River. Howard Swan created the layout in collaboration with Slovenian architect Peter Škofič, shaping a resort course that uses the natural contours rather than forcing a rigid geometric pattern. The official resort description records 75 hectares, 49 bunkers and three water hazards, while the directory lists approximately 6,768 yards. Broad fairways give the opening impression of generosity, but the changing slopes, carefully placed sand and river-country setting reward thoughtful club selection and controlled approaches.
History: The course joined the Otočec resort in 2005, extending the destination's appeal beyond its castle, spa and riverside landscape. Its identity has always been tied to the setting: the golf property sits within the wider Otočec estate, where the Krka, mature trees and historic buildings create a unified resort environment. The course was planned as a full 18-hole experience rather than a short practice layout, and its routing makes the most of several different land forms as it moves through the estate. That combination of golf and heritage tourism has made Otočec one of Slovenia's most distinctive stay-and-play destinations.
Did You Know? Otočec Castle stands on a small island in the Krka River, one of only a few river castles in Slovenia. The golf course is part of the same historic destination, so a round can be paired with a visit to a medieval castle surrounded by water. The contrast between the open playing corridors and the compact island setting gives the resort a memorable sense of place.
