Overview: Located near Rio Maior about 40 minutes north of Lisbon, Golden Eagle Golf Resort was once celebrated as one of the longest and most challenging championship courses in Portugal. Designed by American architect Rocky Roquemore, the layout is a premier example of modern "target golf," featuring nearly 90 bunkers and nine significant lakes across a massive estate of umbrella pines and cork oaks. Although the course has faced operational challenges in recent years and is currently closed to the public, its expansive design and championship pedigree remain a significant part of Portuguese golf history.
Did You Know? At its peak, Golden Eagle was a regular host for international competitions, including the Portugal Ladies Open in 2009. The course was specifically designed to meet North American championship standards, featuring high-quality bentgrass surfaces and a par-5 stretching to nearly 600 meters, making it a "big hitter's" paradise that demanded both power and precision through its heavily bunkered forest corridors.
