Overview: Glen Arven Country Club is an 18-hole private course in Thomasville, Georgia, within the pine and hardwood landscape of the Red Hills region. A current championship scorecard lists par 72 and 6,569 yards, with shorter member and senior tees offering a different scale across the same routing. Wayne Stiles and John Van Kleek shaped the 18-hole course, and the layout’s character comes from traditional corridors, mature trees and the way the holes move across gently varied ground. It is a classic inland course rather than a resort design built around spectacle. The appeal lies in the continuity of the setting, the scale of the tree-lined fairways and the contrast between the historic club identity and the carefully maintained modern playing surfaces.
History: Golf began at Glen Arven in 1892 with nine holes. In 1929, Wayne Stiles and John Van Kleek transformed the property into an 18-hole course, creating the foundation of the layout known today. Bob Cupp led a restoration in 2013, working to renew the course while respecting its established routing and historic setting. Glen Arven’s long timeline is closely tied to Thomasville’s tradition of winter golf and to the Piney Woods Amateur, which has been played at the club since 1919. The result is a course whose history is visible in the continuity of the property rather than in a single recent redevelopment.
Did You Know? Glen Arven’s history is linked to Coburn Haskell and the development of the Haskell golf ball. The club also hosted professional-era events involving players such as Ben Hogan, Sam Snead and Byron Nelson, adding an important chapter to the course’s early reputation.
