Overview: Gávea Golf and Country Club occupies an unusually dramatic corner of Rio de Janeiro, between the Atlantic shore at São Conrado and the granite, forested slopes around Pedra da Gávea. Arthur Morgan Davidson’s compact par-69 layout moves between mountain and coastal ground, making elevation, lies and precise positioning more important than the modest yardage suggests. The setting is not decorative background alone: the changing landform gives the two nines different visual and playing identities, from the more elevated first loop to the lower ground near the sea.
History: The club was founded in 1921 as the Rio de Janeiro Golf Club. After the organization acquired its São Conrado land in 1926, Davidson’s design took shape and the full 18-hole course was in place by 1929. The club has since remained an important part of Brazilian golf history, while later work by Gil Hanse reshaped portions of the lower and mountain sections without erasing the original relationship between the course, forest and coast.
Did You Know? Gávea’s par 69 scorecard contains six par 3s and only two par 5s, an unusual balance that helps explain the course’s reputation for precision. The club also hosted the first Brazilian Amateur and Brazilian Open competitions, giving its compact mountain-and-sea routing an important place in the country’s competitive history.
