Overview: Garden City Country Club is a private Walter Travis course on 120 acres of the Hempstead Plains in central Nassau County. The par-70 routing uses Travis’s characteristic strategic angles, steep-faced bunkers, and small, contoured green sites. At roughly 6,600 yards, it asks for precise positioning and creative recovery rather than length alone.
History: In 1916 the club commissioned Garden City resident Walter Travis to design an 18-hole championship course. The club’s own history describes the result as a Golden Age layout whose land plan and architecture have remained central to its identity for more than a century.
Did You Know? The course occupies the Hempstead Plains, one of Long Island’s distinctive open landscapes. Travis’s routing was fitted to a 120-acre site rather than forced into a heavily wooded setting, which helps explain the course’s clear horizons and strategic use of bunkers.
