Overview: Situated along the Glomma River in southeastern Norway, the Hovedbanen (Main Course) at Gamle Fredrikstad Golfklubb is an 18-hole parkland course designed by Rolf Jensen and Paal Midtvaage. Winding through flat polder land and wetlands, the layout is highly exposed to coastal winds. The design features wide, rolling fairways framed by native grasses, deep sand hazards, and large green complexes, requiring players to control their ball flight and use creative ground-game play.
History: Opened in 2012, the course was built to bring championship-caliber golf to the historic Østfold region. Jensen and Midtvaage transformed former agricultural land into a highly strategic playing field. The course has established a reputation for its excellent drainage and high-quality turf, serving as a regular host for Norwegian amateur championships.
Did You Know? The course lies just a short walk from the historic 17th-century fortress city of Fredrikstad (*Gamlebyen*), the best-preserved fortress town in Northern Europe. Several holes play directly alongside the historic moat systems, offering clear views of the ancient stone walls, drawbridges, and historic bastions.
