Overview: Galen Hall is a public 18-hole parkland course at 645 North Galen Hall Road in Wernersville, Pennsylvania. Alex Findlay's original nine and A.W. Tillinghast's later work create a layout with elevation changes, sidehill lies, mature trees and undulating greens. The current published championship figure is par 72 at 6,271 yards. Rather than relying on length alone, the course asks players to manage angles and accept that a conservative line can be the best route to the next green.
History: Galen Hall's golf story begins in 1912, when Alex Findlay laid out the original nine. A.W. Tillinghast expanded the property to 18 holes in 1917, and William and David Gordon later refined and lengthened the course in 1955. The layout is closely tied to the former Galen Hall resort, which made the site part of the early twentieth-century golf and hospitality history of the Wernersville area. The present course therefore combines resort-era origins with several documented layers of architectural work.
Did You Know? The 15th hole, known as the Moat Hole, is an island-green par three with a long architectural history. Galen Hall presents it as America's first island green, while the Golf Association of Philadelphia describes it as the oldest island green still in continuous use. The distinction is worth preserving because the hole is not a recent resort novelty, but a feature tied to Tillinghast's 1917 expansion.
