Overview: Fuji Classic sits at the foot of Mount Fuji near Lake Kawaguchi, where Desmond Muirhead's 18-hole, par-72 layout uses broad sightlines, shaped ground and a deliberately open, links-inspired presentation. The published length is 7,171 yards. The mountain is a constant visual reference, but the course is not built around one scenic gimmick: the official hole pages show ponds, bunkers and changes in angle that make the score depend on choosing the right side of each fairway. It is a public course with a strong destination identity.
History: Fuji Classic opened in October 1995. Its official history credits Muirhead and describes a design influenced by links principles, while the current course pages preserve the original routing and its relationship with the Fuji landscape. The site is close to the Kawaguchiko travel area, so the course has long worked as part of a wider mountain-lake itinerary rather than only as a local members' club.
Did You Know? The official course page gives the 17th a particularly distinctive visual role, with water and bunker shaping around the green. Muirhead's design uses that kind of feature sparingly enough for it to stand out, while the surrounding holes continue to ask more ordinary but important questions about wind, landing areas and the next shot. The result is a round that looks open but rarely feels automatic.
