Overview: The Havers course is the main eighteen at Frinton Golf Club, a flat seaside links on the Essex coast. Measuring about 6,265 yards to a par of 71, it relies on firm, undulating greens, open fairways, coastal wind and a network of ditches and tidal channels rather than length. The inward half carries three par fives in the closing stretch, which tends to reward a golfer who has saved some patience for the finish. The firm surface invites the ball to run, but tidal ditches and the coastal breeze make it important to choose a line before committing to a full swing.
History: Frinton’s present Havers course opened in 1904 on the coastal site after town growth overtook the original holes near Second and Third Avenues. Willie Park Jr. laid out the new eighteen, and Harry Colt later recommended refinements. Wartime mines interrupted play, and the course was restored by 1947.
Did You Know? The course is named after Arthur Havers, who won the 1923 Open at Troon and later served as Frinton's professional from 1956.
