Overview: Four Mile Ranch is a public 18-hole course in Cañon City, where the Arkansas River valley gives way to Colorado high desert. Jim Engh’s routing uses clay hills, ridges and broad changes in elevation rather than a flat resort grid. Fairways move through open ground with bunker and green contours that ask players to choose lines carefully before attacking the putting surfaces.
History: The course opened in 2008 as a Jim Engh design. Its setting in Fremont County made the surrounding land part of the course’s identity from the beginning, with the layout built around the exposed high-desert terrain and views toward the Sangre de Cristo range.
Did You Know? Four Mile Ranch is associated with Engh’s use of shaped landforms and sod-edged bunker work. The course sits close to the Royal Gorge region, so the golf experience shares its visual language with the canyon country around Cañon City without being a mountain course in the conventional sense.
