Overview: Fossil Trace is a public Jim Engh course in Golden, Colorado, built beside the Rocky Mountain foothills on land once used for clay mining. Rolling fairways, sandstone formations, arroyos and shaped greens give the course a mountain feel within an urban setting. The layout's geological features are not scenery added after construction, but evidence of the land's earlier life.
History: Fossil Trace opened in July 2003 after the former mining property was transformed into a golf course. The design and excavation process exposed prehistoric trace fossils, which became part of the course's identity and the exhibit inside the clubhouse.
Did You Know? Triceratops footprints and other trace fossils can be viewed near the 12th green. The course name refers to those discoveries, while the palm-leaf fossil in the course logo records the tropical climate that once covered the area.
