Overview: Flempton Golf Club lies on sandy heath west of Bury St Edmunds, on land that was part of the Hengrave estate. A cloverleaf routing of three loops brings golfers back to the clubhouse every third hole, with firm, free-draining turf, heather and pines shaping play throughout the year. The small greens are fast and undulating, and the sand-based ground rewards accurate approaches. The fast green complexes can be deceptive, particularly when a running approach arrives from a firm lie.
History: The club was formed in autumn 1895 as the Flempton and Bury St Edmunds Golf Club. In 1906, after buying twelve more acres across the estate road, the members invited J. H. Taylor to redesign and extend the course, and his layout largely survives. The arts-and-crafts clubhouse dates from 1905 and was built and furnished by the first president, Sir John Wood.
Did You Know? Taylor's routing is arranged as a clover leaf of three loops of three holes, returning golfers to the clubhouse every third hole, a rare shape among early English designs.
