Overview: Firestone South is a tree-lined Akron course whose narrow corridors, deep bunkers, and firm green contours create a demanding parkland test. Bert Way’s original routing was substantially strengthened by Robert Trent Jones Sr., and the modern course still shows both the broad structure of the first design and the championship emphasis of the redesign.
History: The South Course opened in 1929 as Firestone Country Club’s original course, designed by Bert Way. Robert Trent Jones Sr. undertook an extensive redesign for the 1960 PGA Championship, adding bunkers, ponds, tees, and length while changing the course to par 70.
Did You Know? Arnold Palmer nicknamed the 16th hole The Monster after a triple bogey during the 1960 PGA Championship, and the name remains attached to the hole today.
