Overview: Farm Neck occupies a peninsula on Martha's Vineyard in Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts, moving between woodland, open meadow, salt marsh and the edge of Vineyard Sound. Geoffrey Cornish, Bill Robinson and Patrick Mulligan collaborated on a course whose landscape changes are as important as its bunker and green contours. The mix gives the round both New England parkland and open coastal qualities.
History: Farm Neck Associates acquired the property with the aim of protecting a relatively undeveloped corner of the island while creating a non-exclusive golf setting. Construction followed in the late 1970s, and the course opened on July 3, 1980 after the three-architect collaboration.
Did You Know? The course crosses several distinct habitats in one round, including salt marsh and open farmland. That variety reflects the original conservation goal, which was to combine golf with a less intensive use of the peninsula than the earlier development proposals.
