Overview: Falsterbo Golf Club is an exposed links on Sweden’s south-western tip, set inside the Flommen nature reserve at the meeting of the Öresund and Baltic landscapes. The course is built over sandy coastal ground with low dunes, natural hollows, small greens, and wind that can change the character of a hole from one round to the next. Gunnar Bauer’s 18-hole design uses the natural contours instead of overpowering them, so the best strategy is often determined by wind direction, angle, and the ability to keep the ball moving along the ground.
History: Falsterbo Golf Club was founded in 1909, and the first nine holes at the present site were constructed in 1911 after the club received permission to lease land near the lighthouse. The full 18-hole course opened in 1930, with Bauer responsible for its design. By 1934, further work had added the present outer-hole sequence. Later work in the 1990s rebuilt the greens, while preserving the character of the natural links. The club has hosted the PLM Open and the 2009 European Ladies Amateur Championship.
Did You Know? Falsterbo lies on one of northern Europe’s important migration routes. The club’s history notes that more than 100 million birds pass over the Falsterbo area every year, making the reserve around the course as significant for birdwatching as it is for golf. The natural setting is not a backdrop added to the course; it is the reason the holes have their distinctive low, wind-shaped character.
