Overview: Estela Golf Club is an 18-hole links on Portugal's Atlantic coast, north of Porto at Póvoa de Varzim. The course extends across a coastal landscape of dunes and natural sand, with the ocean shaping the atmosphere and the prevailing wind influencing the line of play. The profile is par 72 and 6,890 yards. Duarte Sotto-Mayor's design uses the long, open site to create a genuine links experience rather than a parkland course with a few sandy holes. Fairways run through the dune landscape, approaches depend on the ground and the wind can change the correct club from one round to the next. The club describes the course as occupying 62 hectares over an extension of about 3.5 kilometres. Estela's strength is its sense of place: it feels tied to the Atlantic shore, with strategy coming from exposure, lie and direction rather than from artificial spectacle.
History: Estela Golf Club was founded on 27 October 1987, bringing together a group of northern Portuguese golfers who wanted a course in a region with few golf facilities. The course was designed by Duarte Sotto-Mayor and developed as a links beside the Atlantic. The founders later acquired a majority stake in Estela Golf in 1997, while the club continued to invest in renovation work and coastal-erosion control. Estela has hosted major national and international competitions, including the Atlantic Open Vinho Verde in 1990, the Portuguese Open in 1991, the European Seniors Championship in 1994 and the European Club Cup Trophy Men in 2010. Its history is therefore both a club story and a record of Portugal's growing presence as a golf destination.
Did You Know? Estela hosted the Portuguese Open in 1991, only a few years after the club was founded. The course later hosted the European Seniors Championship in 1994, adding a significant international chapter to this young Atlantic links.
