Overview: Outside Lagos, Espiche follows a par-72 routing over 18 holes outside Lagos, set among vineyards, dry hills, and native vegetation of the western Algarve. Peter Sauermann designed a routing that works with the landscape instead of hiding it beneath heavy ornamental planting. Narrower fairways open into broad, undulating greens, while bunkers, lakes, streams, and rough create a test rewarding accuracy and recovery. Its parkland classification is accurate in the database, but the sandy open setting gives it a more natural character than the label alone suggests.
History: Espiche opened in 2012 around an explicit sustainability brief. The operator’s factsheet identifies Sauermann and records the 18-hole par-72 layout, while the course page explains the use of indigenous plants and reduced water demand. The design belongs to a newer generation of Algarve courses that treats water, habitat, and the visual language of the land as part of the architecture rather than as maintenance issues hidden from view.
Did You Know? Espiche’s fairways are framed by olive, almond, and fig trees, with the Monchique mountains visible beyond on clear days. Lakes and streams work as landscape elements as well as hazards. The best line often follows the shape of the land and native planting instead of cutting across it, giving the round a distinct western-Algarve identity.
