Overview: English Turn Golf & Country Club is a Jack Nicklaus Signature course on the outskirts of New Orleans, built around water, lowland terrain and the visual drama of the Mississippi region. The layout combines broad fairway corridors with strategically placed hazards, berms and spectator mounds, creating a course that can look generous from the tee and demanding on the approach. Water is a factor on 17 of the 18 holes, and the island green at the 15th is one of the course’s defining features. The par-72 routing has championship length, but its strongest identity comes from the way Nicklaus uses the flat site to create risk, recovery questions and changing sightlines.
History: The course opened in 1988 and was originally conceived as a championship venue capable of supporting a PGA Tour event in New Orleans. English Turn hosted the USF&G Classic, whose inaugural edition was played in 1989, and the tournament remained associated with the facility through later editions, including events in 2004 and 2006 after the disruption caused by Hurricane Katrina. Nicklaus Design still identifies the property as an 18-hole, par-72 Jack Nicklaus course, and the club’s history is closely tied to the city’s professional tournament ambitions.
Did You Know? The 15th hole is an island green, while the 18th was often regarded as the hardest hole on the tournament course. Those two holes bookend a memorable stretch in which water and closing pressure become central to the design.
