Overview: Eldorado Country Club is a private desert course in Indian Wells, set against the Coachella Valley mountains. The present 18-hole routing plays to par 71 and 6,737 yards from the black tees, with water, palms and broad desert views shaping a traditional parkland layout. Its architecture is layered: Lawrence Hughes created the original course, while Tom Fazio later rebuilt it rather than simply making a light renovation. The result is a course where the desert setting remains visible, but the strategy is carried through turf, ponds, bunker placement and carefully framed approach shots.
History: Eldorado’s first round was played on November 22, 1957, on a course associated with Lawrence Hughes. The club became a regular venue in the Coachella Valley’s professional-golf history, including the 1959 Ryder Cup. In 2003, Tom Fazio demolished the existing course and rebuilt the routing, changing hole configuration, widening tee areas, reshaping greens and bunkers, and adding extensive water features and landscaping. The 2003 date therefore describes the current course more accurately than the club’s 1957 beginning.
Did You Know? Fazio’s rebuild created a deliberate pair of finishing holes around water. The ninth and eighteenth are both par fives that use ponds and water features to frame the closing moments of their respective nines, but they do so with different angles and green approaches. That mirrored idea is one of the clearest ways to see how the current course combines a historic club site with a fully reworked modern routing.
