Overview: Oceanside’s private El Camino course provides eighteen William H. Johnson-designed holes in Oceanside, playing to par 72 and 6,840 yards from the black tees. The club describes an old-style layout that leaves the natural rolling terrain largely intact, with eucalyptus and Monterey pines framing undulating fairways, lakes and more than sixty bunkers. The course is walkable in character even though its scorecard offers a full-length test.
History: The club was established in 1958, with the first nine formally brought into play on January 3, 1959. Ted Vallas added the second nine in 1960, and the two nines were later switched to the current layout. The club also records a 2016 improvement program involving fairways, greenside collars and bunkers.
Did You Know? El Camino’s current 18-hole identity arrived in stages rather than all at once. The first nine entered play in 1959, the second followed in 1960, and the layout’s nines were later reordered, leaving a layered history behind the present scorecard.
