Overview: The West Water Course is the nine-hole companion to the main eighteen at Edzell Golf Club, in the Angus village at the foot of Glen Esk. It plays to a par of 32 and suits a short evening loop, a junior round or a warm-up before tackling the longer course. The holes share the same open, gently rolling ground at the edge of the village, with the Grampian foothills rising to the north.
History: The West Water was added in 2001 to a club whose main course dates from the Victorian era. The design is credited to Scottish architect Graeme Webster, and the course was planned as a separate routing rather than a loop of the existing holes, which gives Edzell 27 holes in total. It takes its name from the West Water, the river that joins the North Esk close to the village.
Did You Know? The West Water river that gives the course its name rises in the Angus glens and meets the North Esk just south of Edzell. That makes the course one of the few in Scotland named after a river confluence rather than a landowner or estate.
