Overview: East Sussex National’s West Course is the second 18-hole parkland routing at the resort near Uckfield. Robert E. Cupp’s design works across the undulating Wealden landscape, using open ground, trees and water to frame a course that reaches 7,154 yards at par 72 in the current resort record. Its length is only one part of the challenge: the player must also decide when to take on a feature and when to use the wider landing area to protect the next shot.
History: The West was created as part of East Sussex National’s 36-hole complex and shares the resort’s documented European Open history from 1993 and 1994. Robert E. Cupp designed both courses, so the two layouts belong to the same architectural story while remaining different rounds. The official history gives the course identity, designer and specifications, but does not provide a sufficiently clear opening date for this exact routing. The date is therefore left unfilled.
Did You Know? The West is listed as the longer course of the two in the resort’s current specifications, even though both are par 72. That makes the choice between East and West more than a cosmetic change for visiting golfers. The pair can form a full weekend destination, with the same countryside setting offering two separate tests of distance management and positioning.
