Overview: Earl Grey Golf Club’s main course is an 18-hole private parkland layout beside Calgary’s Glenmore Reservoir. Golf Canada lists it at par 72 and 7,041 yards, while the club describes a 130-acre property with views across the reservoir and a separate nine-hole Lakeview course. The main route mixes mature vegetation, shaped fairways and carefully rebuilt greens, with the water and the surrounding parkland providing a strong sense of place. It is a course where the history of the property is visible, but the current playing experience is defined by a substantial modern redesign as much as by the original club.
History: Earl Grey was founded in 1919 by Duncan Stuart. The club began with five holes, moved through earlier Calgary locations and eventually reached the Glenmore Reservoir site, where the main course developed into a full 18-hole layout. Golf-course architect Philip Boese is credited with the 1933 completion of that course. In 2017 and 2018, Wayne Carleton carried out a major renovation that rebuilt seven holes, revised bunkering, added a new par three and adjusted the routing around a public pathway. The result is a historic club with a clearly contemporary championship course.
Did You Know? The 2017-18 redesign had to respond to a public pathway crossing the property. Rather than simply accepting the old routing, the project changed several holes, introduced a new par three and rebuilt seven holes, showing how a historic course can adapt its architecture to the way a modern city uses the surrounding land.
