Overview: Dukhan Golf Course is a traditional 18-hole sand course located in the industrial and residential town of Dukhan on the western coast of Qatar. Built in 1997 to serve the employees of the petroleum industry, the course is a pure desert layout where the entire experience is played over compacted sand and rock. Instead of grass, the course uses "browns"—sand putting surfaces treated with oil to ensure a smooth and true roll—providing an authentic and technical version of the game that predates the greening of the region's capital.
Did You Know? Golfers at Dukhan are required to use transition mats (small pieces of artificial grass) for every shot on the fairways to prevent disturbing the natural desert floor. The course offers a quiet, community-focused alternative to the luxury resorts of Doha, preserving the historic "oil-patch" golfing culture of the Gulf where the challenge lies in reading the texture of the sand rather than the grain of the grass.
