Overview: Dom Pedro Pinhal was the second golf course built in Vilamoura, opening in 1976 on rolling ground threaded with umbrella and Atlantic pines. Frank Pennink supplied the original design, while Robert Trent Jones Sr. made significant refinements in 1985. The par-72 parkland routing uses the trees as both frame and hazard, with ponds and a stream appearing on several holes. Fairway lines often ask for a choice between the direct route and safer angle. It is a course of restraint, where position matters more than visual drama.
History: Pinhal began as Vilamoura’s second course and retains a clear link with the resort’s early golf development. The 1985 Jones work adjusted the layout for changing equipment and playing expectations, and later lengthening gave it modern championship distance while keeping its identity. The clubhouse was modernized around the turn of the millennium, but the central story remains the meeting of Pennink’s English design language and later American refinement.
Did You Know? Five holes bring ponds or a stream into play, yet water is not the only defining hazard. Mature pine trunks can stand close to a fairway or beside a green, turning an apparently safe line into a blocked angle for the next shot. The course rewards players who read tree lines as carefully as bunkers and keep the best side of the hole in view.
