Overview: The Millennium routing covers 18 holes at par 72 in Vilamoura in Vilamoura alternating open parkland with narrower pine corridors. Martin Hawtree’s work created a new nine and incorporated nine refurbished holes from the former 27-hole Laguna complex, giving the course a layered identity. Open sections invite a confident line, but tree corridors, tiered greens, bunkers, and lakes reward a measured strategy. The apparent width of the land can change from hole to hole.
History: The Millennium course opened in 2000 as Vilamoura’s fourth 18-hole course. Nine holes were retained and redeveloped from Laguna, while the new nine extended the golf landscape through pine woodland. Project records also credit Ken Moodie as the detailed project architect working on behalf of Hawtree, a useful distinction from the overall design attribution in the course database.
Did You Know? The sixth is a par-three with a lake close to the target line, while the seventeenth and eighteenth use water to sharpen the closing decisions. Those holes explain the balance between open land and enclosed pine corridors. Millennium is not simply a newer companion to Laguna; it is a carefully assembled routing with a visible change of character across eighteen holes.
