Overview: Dom Pedro Laguna is an open, low-lying 18-hole course in Vilamoura where coastal wind, lakes, and exposed fairways create the main strategic questions. Joseph Lee’s par-72 routing has a links-influenced feel because trees are sparse and the land sits close to the sea, but its defining hazards are inland water features and carefully placed bunkers. Fairways may appear broad from the tee, yet the best approach angle often depends on avoiding a lake or choosing a line to a comfortable part of the green.
History: The Laguna course opened in 1990 as part of Vilamoura’s expanding golf landscape and was originally associated with a 27-hole complex. Later redevelopment of nine holes helped form neighboring Millennium, while Laguna continued as its own 18-hole routing. That shared history explains why records mention both the original larger complex and the present course. This profile is for Joseph Lee’s Laguna routing, not the later Millennium design.
Did You Know? Published course material counts water hazards on eleven of eighteen holes, making Laguna’s name unusually literal. The water appears in different forms: broad lakes, narrow channels, and island targets, while coastal wind changes how much is visible from the tee. The tactical character comes from that combination of open ground and recurring water.
