Overview: Devils Knob at Wintergreen Resort is a private mountain course by Ellis Maples, set at roughly 3,850 feet above sea level in Virginia’s Blue Ridge. The 18-hole layout plays to par 72 and 6,712 yards from the blue markers, with mountaintop views over the Shenandoah and Rockfish valleys. The setting is high and open in places, but the golf is controlled by forest, elevation changes, fast greens and the way the fairways sit across the plateau. Compared with Wintergreen’s lower Stoney Creek course, Devils Knob has a cooler, more exposed character and a stronger emphasis on altitude and long-distance judgment.
History: Ellis Maples designed Devils Knob as part of Wintergreen Resort’s original mountain golf development, and the course opened in 1977. The resort’s golf program later expanded with the lower Stoney Creek course, but Devils Knob retained its role as the mountaintop layout. Its position at the highest elevation in Virginia gives the course a distinctive climate as well as its views, and the surrounding resort community has continued to preserve the forested mountain setting around the holes.
Did You Know? Devils Knob is Virginia’s highest golf course at about 3,850 feet. The mountaintop location gives Devils Knob a cooler summer climate than the valleys below, with the resort describing average temperatures around 76 degrees. That high-altitude setting is part of the course’s identity as much as its panoramic views.
