Overview: Geronimo is a Jack Nicklaus Signature course at Desert Mountain in Scottsdale, built across a broad Sonoran setting with dramatic elevation changes and long mountain views. The layout uses wide fairways, desert edges and shifting uphill and downhill shots to create a course that is generous in appearance but exacting in execution. Nicklaus gave the holes room to breathe, allowing the land and the light to shape the round while strategic bunkering and green contours determine how aggressively each line can be played.
History: Desert Mountain began in 1986 as a partnership between developer Lyle Anderson and Jack Nicklaus, after the former Carefree Ranch was identified as the foundation for a new desert community. After the first two courses, Geronimo became the third Nicklaus course in 1989. The early sequence established the club's unusual identity: multiple championship courses by one architect, each using the same desert setting but expressing it through a different strategic emphasis.
Did You Know? Jack Nicklaus called Geronimo the "strong-looking course" because of its broad fairways and dramatic landforms. The description captures the course's visual presence without reducing it to scenery: the elevation changes also influence club selection and the shape of the best approach angles.
