Overview: Desert Canyon Golf Club is Fountain Hills’ oldest golf course, an 18-hole public layout that opened in 1971 as Fountain Hills Golf Club. John Allen designed the par-71 course, which current course records list at 6,415 yards from the longest tees. Elevated tees and greens, canyon-carved turns and views toward the McDowell Mountains and Four Peaks create a strong sense of vertical movement. The layout is close enough to the Phoenix and Scottsdale markets to fit easily into a visitor itinerary, but its Fountain Hills setting gives the round a quieter, more local desert character.
History: The course was renamed Desert Canyon in 1998 and remains family-owned and operated, according to the current operator. Its long history gives the facility a special place in Fountain Hills, where later resort courses often compete for attention with dramatic new construction. Desert Canyon’s identity is more established: it is a long-running community course with a familiar routing, a full practice and dining offering and a landscape that has continued to define the town’s golf reputation.
Did You Know? The 550-foot Fountain Hills fountain can be seen from almost every hole and rises at the top of each hour. It gives the course a visual landmark that is unusually large, local and easy to recognise during a round.
