Overview: De Zalze Golf Course is a Peter Matkovich parkland layout within the Winelands outside Stellenbosch. Vineyards, olive groves, mountain views and the Blaauwklippen River share the setting, while lakes, bunkers and shaped approaches make the 18-hole par 72 routing more than a scenic walk. The directory records 6,965 yards from its longest published figure. Broad fairways can invite a confident line, but the best score usually comes from planning how the river and water hazards affect the next shot.
History: The official club history traces the course to the mid-1990s, when Peter Matkovich was commissioned to design an 18-hole layout across three farms on the edge of Stellenbosch. The course opened around 2000 and became part of the De Zalze Winelands Golf Estate. Its later identity has been shaped by the combination of a working agricultural landscape and a deliberately modern parkland routing, rather than by a resort course placed on an empty site.
Did You Know? The 18th is a short risk-and-reward par four that crosses the Blaauwklippen River. The current South African course record notes that the elevated back tee has not always been used, so the same closing hole can present a materially different decision depending on the tee setup. That final crossing gives De Zalze a precise architectural signature within its vineyard setting.
