Overview: Cotton Dike is the first of Dataw Island’s two private courses in St. Helena Island, South Carolina. Tom Fazio’s Lowcountry design uses marsh edges, Jenkins Creek, live-oak country, and a network of historic dikes to create a strategic course whose water views are closely tied to the property’s past.
History: Cotton Dike was the first golf course created at Dataw Island and was built on land shaped by dikes originally intended to reclaim marsh for cotton fields. Fazio’s design kept nearly half the holes close to the marsh and Jenkins Creek, making the old landscape part of the current routing.
Did You Know? The course name is literal: the property’s dikes were built during the plantation era to create more land for cotton production. Today those same earthworks help frame a Tom Fazio course and the Lowcountry views around it.
