Overview: Damai Indah Golf and Country Club’s Bumi Serpong Damai course is an 18-hole, par-72 parkland layout in South Tangerang, West Java. Jack Nicklaus designed the course as his first project in Indonesia, using the rolling BSD landscape, lakes and planted corridors to create the setting known as the Spirit of the Hills. The club’s official page lists 6,545 metres, approximately 7,160 yards, so the directory length is updated to that current equivalent. The course is designed to present several possible solutions on many holes rather than a single forced line, making the quality of the second shot and the choice of angle as important as raw distance.
History: The BSD course opened in 1992 as one of the two championship courses created by developer Ciputra’s Damai Indah Golf project. The other course, Pantai Indah Kapuk in North Jakarta, is a separate Robert Trent Jones Jr. design, so the BSD history should not be blended with the coastal PIK routing. The club’s later record includes the Indonesia President Invitational in 2007 and 2009 and the Indonesia PGA Championship in 2014. Those events helped establish the BSD course as a serious tournament venue while its original Nicklaus character remained the foundation of the layout.
Did You Know? Nicklaus described the BSD design as a course without one correct approach on most holes, with several possible solutions that allow the layout to change as a golfer’s decisions improve. That idea is especially relevant to the Spirit of the Hills setting, where lakes, slopes and planting can alter the safest angle even when the fairway appears open from the tee.
