Crystal Downs Country Club

Overview: Crystal Downs occupies a narrow, rolling strip between Lake Michigan and Crystal Lake near Frankfort. Alister MacKenzie and Perry Maxwell allowed the dunes, slopes and lake winds to define the routing, creating elevated greens, naturally moving fairways and wide views in several directions. The course remains remarkably direct in its relationship with the land, with strategic interest coming from slope, angle and changing wind rather than from elaborate constructed scenery.

History: A nine-hole layout existed on the property by 1927, but developer Walkley Ewing wanted a course that matched the scale and quality of the site. MacKenzie and Maxwell visited in 1928, worked through an 18-hole routing and began construction the following year. MacKenzie did not return to see the finished course, but Maxwell supervised the work through the completion of the back nine in 1933 and followed the routing and green concepts they had developed together.

Did You Know? Crystal Downs is unusual even among historic MacKenzie courses because its original design remains substantially unaltered. The club’s current description highlights the fifth and eighth holes as standout examples of the architecture, while the historical record shows Maxwell shaping the construction with simple equipment and existing landforms. The course’s lasting character comes from that close fit between the original design and the dunes on which it sits.
