Overview: Crowborough Beacon Golf Club sits about 800 feet up on the High Weald in East Sussex, one of the highest points in the county. The heathland course is exposed and undulating, and on clear days the views reach towards the English Channel. It measures a little over 6,300 yards to a par of 71, with wind and natural contours mattering more than length. At this height, wind and exposure are part of the test, while heathland contours rather than sheer length shape the round. On clear days the outlook reaches towards the coast, but changes in ground level still influence club choice when the weather is calm.
History: Golf began in 1895 with nine holes on the Alchorne estate across Crowborough Common, and the course was extended to eighteen by 1905. The original designer is not firmly recorded, but the layout later received advice from Harry Colt and a redesign of eight holes by Alister MacKenzie, which shaped much of the present course.
Did You Know? At roughly 800 feet on the High Weald, Crowborough is among the highest golf courses in East Sussex. On clear days the elevated ground gives views towards the English Channel, while the exposed setting keeps wind in play.
