Overview: Craig Wood Golf & Country Club is a public 18-hole mountain course in the Adirondack countryside near Lake Placid. Seymour Dunn designed the layout in 1925, and the current course measures 6,554 yards at par 72. The routing uses the natural Adirondack setting rather than flattening it, with wooded corridors, ravines, sloping approaches and views toward the surrounding high peaks. Its signature appeal is the combination of traditional golf and a dramatic mountain landscape, with enough strategic detail to reward careful positioning throughout the round.
History: The course began as the Lake Placid Golf and Country Club and was renamed Craig Wood Golf Course in 1954 to honor the local golfer. Craig Wood won the 1941 Masters and U.S. Open and played on three Ryder Cup teams, making the name a significant part of Lake Placid’s sporting history. The Town of North Elba now owns and operates the course, preserving its role as a municipal golf destination while continuing to upgrade the property as needed.
Did You Know? The closing 18th asks for a drive over a ravine followed by an uphill approach to a sloped green. It is a fitting finish for a course where the Adirondack terrain remains part of the golf strategy rather than just a distant view.
