Overview: Cradoc Golf Club is an 18-hole parkland course on the northern side of the Usk Valley near Brecon, with the Brecon Beacons providing the backdrop. C. K. Cotton's layout uses the rolling ground around Penoyre Park rather than flattening the site, creating mature tree-lined fairways, sloping approaches and views that remain visible throughout the round. The course is a relatively young Welsh design, but its established trees and natural surroundings give it the atmosphere of an older parkland course. The mix of demanding holes and peaceful scenery makes the experience as much about the setting as the score.
History: Cradoc's official account says that during the winter of 1966/1967 two people decided Brecon needed a new 18-hole course. The project took shape at Penoyre Park, where the golf course and clubhouse were developed around the estate's landscape. The club's story describes 1969 as the year when that ambition became reality, while established golf references identify C. K. Cotton as the architect and 1967 as the course's foundation date. That distinction preserves the difference between the project beginning, the course design and the later completion of the club's wider facilities.
Did You Know? Cradoc's own course description highlights an abundance of wildlife alongside its mature tree-lined fairways and occasional water hazards. The surrounding Brecon Beacons views are not a distant backdrop: the elevated northern side of the Usk Valley allows the mountain scenery to appear repeatedly between the trees as the holes move across Penoyre Park.
