Country Club of Mobile (Regulation)

Overview: The Regulation Course at the Country Club of Mobile is a classic parkland layout on the club’s Spring Hill property. Donald Ross’s influence is visible in the emphasis on position, angles and carefully shaped greens, while the mature trees and gently changing ground give the course a settled Mobile character. The course is listed at 7,015 yards and par 72, but its interest comes from how the holes ask a player to use the correct side of the fairway before approaching the putting surface. Ron Forse’s restoration work added a modern layer while respecting the older strategic framework.

History: The Country Club of Mobile was organised in 1899 and moved to the present Spring Hill site in the early twentieth century. A clubhouse was completed there during the 1910s, and local historical accounts place Donald Ross’s work on the same general routing before the 1928 layout was set out. The club and Top100 course record identify 1928 as the date the Ross layout was set out, which is the course date used here. Ron Forse later renovated the course as part of a broader movement to recover Ross-style bunkering and green relationships. The result is a layered history rather than a single untouched construction date.

Did You Know? The club’s present course history includes two different Ross milestones: early design work before the 1928 layout date and the later setting-out of the course for play. That distinction explains why published opening dates do not always agree.
