Overview: The West course at the Country Club of Birmingham occupies the club's Shades Valley property. Its parkland setting combines the original Donald Ross land plan with later work by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and Pete Dye, creating a layered design history rather than a single-period layout.
History: The club was founded in 1898 and moved to Shades Valley in 1926, where it had 36 holes designed by Donald Ross. The West course was later converted by Jones and revised by Dye, with a further renovation in 1984.
Did You Know? The West and East courses share the club's Ross origin but are not interchangeable. The East remains the clearer surviving expression of the original Ross design, while the West records the later Jones and Dye interventions.
