Overview: Easton's Connecticut Golf Club occupies an 18-hole course set in rugged, wooded southwestern Connecticut terrain. Geoffrey Cornish's design, with the later Silva and Mungeam work, is listed at par 72 and 6,900 yards. Doglegs, elevation changes, water carries and elevated tees make the land an active part of the round. Four par threes use carries over water, while the par fives ask the player to navigate the property rather than simply advance the ball in a straight line. Its greens vary widely in contour, size and elevation.
History: Lawrence A. Wien and Geoffrey Cornish created the club in 1966 as a golf retreat devoted primarily to playing the game. The site was considered difficult ground for golf because of its ledges, streams and uneven terrain. Construction reshaped some of those obstacles with blasting, ponds and relocated water, while preserving the rugged New England setting. In 2002, Brian Silva, one of Cornish's original design associates, revised greens, fairways, bunkers and trees while retaining the original routing.
Did You Know? The 16th green is 68 yards deep and divided into four tiers. It is a precise example of the course's design language: the same green can present very different approach and putting problems depending on the day's hole location.
