Overview: Winding through Bethesda's mature hardwood trees and rolling hills, the Blue Course at Congressional is a parkland layout. The design features dramatic elevation changes, strategic sand bunkers, and large, undulating green complexes that demand precision. Andrew Green's complete 2021 restoration revived the classic scale, open sightlines, and dramatic hazard styling of the original Devereux Emmet design, establishing a challenging, walk-friendly test of golf that requires thoughtful shot placement on every hole.
History: Originally designed by Devereux Emmet and opened in 1924, the Blue Course has a rich heritage of hosting national tournaments. It has been the venue for three U.S. Opens, a PGA Championship, and the 1995 U.S. Senior Open. Over the years, Robert Trent Jones Sr. and Rees Jones modified the routing to enhance strategic play while preserving the historical character.
Did You Know? The closing hole is a par-four playing downhill to a green guarded by a pond, with the club's historic Mediterranean-style clubhouse providing a dramatic backdrop. Players must execute a precise long iron to find the putting surface under pressure, making it one of the most recognized finishing holes in championship golf.
