Overview: Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, Maryland, is a parkland layout defined by its hilly terrain and mature trees. The design features narrow fairways, small green complexes, and steep greenside bunkers that require precise approach shots. The routing utilizes the natural ridges and valleys of the property to create a strategic test that rewards accuracy over power, demanding focus on every swing.
History: Established in 1909, the course opened in 1911 and was designed by Herbert Barker with significant consultation from Walter Travis. The course hosted the 1921 U.S. Open, where Jim Barnes won by nine strokes. It has undergone minor renovations to preserve its classic Golden Age character and challenging putting surfaces.
Did You Know? President Woodrow Wilson was a regular player at the club and frequently walked the fairways of Columbia, often finding golf to be a peaceful escape from the duties of the presidency. His interest in the sport helped popularize golf among the political community in the early twentieth century.
