Overview: Coimbatore Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-72 course at Chettipalayam in Tamil Nadu, on the southern side of the Coimbatore urban area. The club's current course page lists 6,540 yards from the white tees and 5,893 from the red tees. Playing conditions change markedly with the seasons: strong westerly winds from May to September make the course more demanding, while calmer summer conditions can make it easier. Bermuda greens, irrigated fairways and rough that depends on rainfall give the course a natural seasonal variation rather than a fixed test throughout the year.
History: The club grew from a small group of Coimbatore golfers who previously travelled to Ooty, Coonoor and Kodaikanal to play. The official history describes the first local step as a nine-hole course with browns and a driving range on land leased from the Coimbatore Jail. Members then built the present 18-green course with limited funds, local knowledge and a great deal of practical experimentation. The organisation gradually added a fuller clubhouse, coaching and practice facilities, while keeping its founding emphasis on conduct and respect for the game.
Did You Know? Coimbatore's wind calendar is part of its course strategy. The club says strong westerlies normally arrive between May and September, while easterly winds are weaker from October to January. Because the rough relies on rainfall, the vegetation around the fairways also changes with the season. A golfer returning at a different time of year can therefore encounter noticeably different lies, wind angles and approaches on the same 18-hole routing.
