Overview: In Victor, Cobblestone Creek Country Club offers a private Scottish links-style course with 18 holes, part of the Rochester golf market. Michael Hurdzan and Craig Schreiner routed the course across 412 acres of hills, meadows, creeks, ponds and woodland. The layout measures 6,866 yards at par 72 and uses mounding, bunkers and water to create a strong strategic framework. Although it is inland, the open ground and shaped fairways give the course a links-inspired character that is unusual in western New York.
History: Local developer and golfer Bill Wilmot conceived Cobblestone Creek as a championship club and began construction in 1990. The course officially opened in summer 1991 and quickly drew national attention, including Golf Digest’s recognition as the tenth best new course in the country in 1992. In 2019 the property became member-owned, and a phased renovation with Hurdzan’s input rebuilt or reduced bunkers and widened selected playing areas. The work has aimed to make the original design more playable while protecting its identity.
Did You Know? Water comes into play on ten of the eighteen holes, according to the Rochester District Golf Association. That is a large part of the course’s name and character, but the open, tree-light routing also keeps the golf visually connected to the surrounding land.
