Overview: Club de Golf Yucatán, commonly known as La Ceiba, is an 18-hole private course on the Mérida-Progreso corridor north of Mérida. The current club describes it as the first golf course in southeastern Mexico and a long-standing meeting place for families and golfers. Its parkland character comes from tree-lined fairways, gardens and a settled residential setting rather than a new beach resort landscape. The course is a useful base for golfers combining a Mérida stay with the region’s cultural and archaeological attractions.
History: The club was founded on 16 September 1970 and has more than five decades of sporting and social history in Yucatán. Development history records Felix Mier y Terán and Vicente Erosa as the visionaries who brought golf to the area, acquired the land and shaped the original layout and community. The club has since grown into a family institution with hundreds of member families. Its long continuity is more important than a single resort launch date, and the current course remains the same destination identity known as La Ceiba.
Did You Know? La Ceiba sits near the Dzibilchaltún archaeological area and the road to Progreso, putting a round of golf within the same travel plan as Maya heritage and the Gulf coast. The club’s name also carries a local botanical reference: a ceiba is a culturally important tree across the Maya world. That makes the name especially apt for a course whose identity is built around mature landscape, regional history and a distinctly Yucatecan sense of place.
